The Orangetown Police Department is now equipped with Laerdal Heartstart FR Model E semi-automatic portable defibrillators. Units are carried in patrol cars for immediate use upon arrival at the scene of an emergency. All department members were required to attend a course in the use of the units given by the Rockland County Emergency Medical Technicians.

The defibrillator is lightweight, portable, and battery powered. it performs automatic self tests and displays the results of these tests on a Status Indicator. The defibrillator has an LCD screen that displays instructions and prompts, patient and event information, and is equipped with an electrocardiogram (ECG) and voice prompts. Every patrol car is equipped with a unit and one is kept at the police department headquarters. Our first time use of one of the units shortly after we received them was for a person who had a heart attack at the Town Hall (No! It wasn't at the Tax office!).
