Youth Police AcademyProgram Information The Orangetown Police Department began this pilot program in 1997. The Youth Police Academy is a two week indoctrination and training session for male and female youths 14 - 18 years of age and is a condensed version of a real Police Academy. The inaugural session was started on Monday, July 14th, 1997 and ended on Friday, July 25th with a picnic and presentations of graduate certificates. 26 candidates were introduced and sworn in at a Town Board meeting the night of July 14th. Training consisted of daily physical exercise, military courtesy training, and classroom study of the elements, equipment and history of law enforcement with guest speakers and instructors from the various law enforcement agencies in the county. Cirriculum included patrol ride-alongs and visits to other law enforcement agencies in the county. Cadets are generally exposed to the police profession as a career choice. Participation is not a precursor to a law enforcement career nor is it associated with the Rockland County Police Academy. Created by siteadmin. Last modified 2008-07-03 09:21:16. |
