Mission of the Orangetown Police D.A.R.E. program

The purpose of the program is a collaborative effort by DARE Certified law enforcement officers, educators, students, parents, and community to offer an educational program in the classroom to prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and youth.  The officers are present in the school in an educational Community Policing function.  To this end, enforcement actions by the officers should be limited to only those actions necessitated by emergencies.

 The DARE program is taught using several components as follows:

1. The elementary component is taught in the public and parochial schools at the fifth grade level. It is a structured 17 week
program that is integrated into the class schedules.

2. The middle school/junior high school component is a 10 lesson program that is taught in the public and parochial schools.

3. The parent component is taught to parents in the community.  It is not restricted to "parents".  This course is best scheduled
both during the day and evening hours to maximize the ability of parents to attend.

Training:

In addition to maintaining all necessary police officer training and certifications, the DARE officers will keep current all necessary
DARE training and certifications. DARE training will consist of but not be limited to the following:

1. Elementary Component Certification;

2. Middle School/Junior High School Component Certification;

3. Parent Component Certification;

4. Any training required by grants or donations.
