C.I.R.T.The Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is made up of officers specially trained in hostage situation negotiations, forcible entry procedures, rescue operations and special assault weapons.
The CIRT team responds to incidents in which subjects have taken hostages, or barricaded themselves. The team is divided into three sub-teams; the Hostage Negotiators, the Entry Team and the Sniper Team. The hostage negotiators are responsible for making contact with the subject(s) and attempting to persuade them to release hostages and/or end the situation peacibly. The entry team is responsible for gaining entry to barricaded premises using special equipment for the rescue of hostages or the capture of subjects. The sniper team is the last step in the attempted release of hostages. Used when all other methods for bringing the situation to a safe conclusion have been attempted without success and there is a serious threat to the safety of hostages or innocents.
