History and Evolution of the Orangetown Police Department patch and other issued OPD patches

Notice for Patch collectors:
Do not E-mail webmaster for patches. Requests for patches must be snail-mailed to the police department administration office or the DARE office. A $5.00 (US) fee will be charged for available patches. Such fee includes shipping and handling. As of this date, only two patches are for sale. All patches are worn on the left sleeve of uniform shirts, coats, and jackets except where noted.

 

This 2 color (yellow on blue) triangular patch was worn up until 1974. Unknown when it was first issued but it is the successor to the one below. This patch is not available.

History of this patch is unknown. It is not faded! Gold on pale blue flannel. It is believed to be one of the first patches issued. Dated sometime before 1950. This patch is the only one known in existence. This patch is not available.

This shield shaped patch, adopted in 1974, has 3 colors on a blue cloth background. Gold lettering and outlines on the blue background with an orange circular center field overlaid with a green town shaped outline and the date of the town creation centered in the green field. The New York State Seal in gold and blue overlays the lower portion of the patch. This patch is not available.

This 9 color patch is the latest issue patch (1995) and is on new issue uniform shirts and jackets. There is no difference in the basic design of the 1974 patch except that the background is embroidered, color fields are more satinized, the letters and outlines are more densely sewn, and the New York State Seal has been colorized with 5 additional colors. Patches are available for $5.00 (USD) plus postage.

This is the shoulder patch worn by members of the Nyack Village Police Department until their disbandment in 1991. Some of the former Nyack Police Officers are now part of the Orangetown Police Department. This patch is not available.

This patch is worn on the right sleeve of members of the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit which is responsible for enforcing Federal and State Commercial Vehicle Laws. They also operate the truck scales. The patch on the left is the dress patch, the one on the right is worn on the inspection uniform. This patch is not available.

This patch is worn by members of The Critical Incident Response Team. The CIRT responds to incidents of Hostage taking or Barricaded subjects. The CIRT has members trained in negotiating and forcible entry to effect rescue or arrest.This patch is not available.

This FBI National Academy patch on the left is worn on the right sleeve of FBINA Graduates. The patch on the right is the FBINA 50th year anniversary commemorative patch issued in the 1985 sessions. Our graduates of the FBINA. This patch is not available.

This patch was worn on the right sleeve by members of the former K-9 Unit.This patch is not available. This unit was disbanded following a court decision regarding overtime pay for home care of the dogs. This patch is not available.

   

This patch is worn on both sleeves of dress uniforms by members of the PBA Honor Guard and PBA Motorcycle Unit. This patch is not available.

 

This patch is worn on the right sleeve of the Accident Investigation Team. The Accident Investigation Team is responsible for preparing diagrams and detailed reports of fatal or unusual accidents for testimony at Trials or Official Inquiries. This patch is not available.

 

This patch is worn by the Orangetown Animal Control Officers (Dog Wardens). This patch is not available.

 

This patch is worn on the right sleeve of the D.A.R.E. officers. Patches are being offered for sale at $5.00 each. Contact the Dare office.

 

This Orangetown Police Benevolent Association 5 color patch is not authorized to be worn on any uniform but is issued by the OPBA to be worn on any member's civilian garb. This patch is not available.
