Police Department FAQ
Q: Do you do Fingerprinting for licenses? A: The Orangetown Police Department will fingerprint any resident of the town, or any person who works in a company or business situated within the town, for any lawful purpose including; Bingo License applications, Peddling permits, State Liquor Authority and Personal ID, except for the following: I. Immigration & Naturalization Services (INS) will only accept fingerprint cards processed at certified INS Designated Fingerprint Services (DFS). Rockland County currently has two DFS locations performing fingerprinting of immigration applicants. Both of these locations charge a fee for this service. 1. Rockland County Clerk's Office, 27 New Hempstead Rd., New City, NY. Mon-Wed-Fri. 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Call (845) 638-5221 for further information. 2. Center for Immigration Support, 22 South Main St., New City, NY. Mon thru Fri. 9:15 AM to 1:15 PM or call (845) 639-4522 for an appointment or further information. II. Firearms Licenses (Carry or Dealer) are done by the Rockland County Sheriff's Office (845) 364-5400
Q: Do I need to bring fingerprint cards? A: If you are required to have fingerprints taken for any agency and have been issued blank fingerprint cards for this purpose, please bring them with you. Otherwise we supply them.
Q: How much does fingerprinting cost? A: The cost for fingerprinting is $10 for town residents and $20 for non-residents. Q: When can I have them done? A: Fingerprinting is scheduled by appointment only during the following hours: Tuesdays 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM Please call 359-5782 for an appointment. Note: All fingerprint applicants are routinely checked for Criminal activity and warrants.
Q: Do you check Vacant Houses? A: The Police Department, upon request, will check your vacant house during your extended absence. You may call in or stop in and fill out a form to have us do this. In addition to your name, address, phone number and dates of vacancy, we will need the following information: 1. Where you can be reached in an emergency. 2. The name(s) of persons with a key to your house (to gain emergency access or to secure it or turn off alarms). 3. If you are leaving any lights on (continuously or by timer). 4. If you are leaving any vehicles in the driveway or garage (Need description and plate numbers). 5. The type of heating you have (gas, oil, electric). 6. The names of anyone authorized to be at your house for pet, plant tending, work, etc. 7. Any other information which would be of interest to us for officer safety (hazards, dogs, etc)
Q: What time is the Parade in Pearl River? A: The annual St Patricks Day and Columbus Day parades in Pearl River start at 1:30 PM on Sunday. In the event that the particular holiday falls on a Sunday, the parade will be held on that Sunday, otherwise the parade will be held on the Sunday following the holiday. Most other parades also start at 1:30 PM but they may not be on a Sunday.
Q: Where does the parade start? A: Most parades start from the south parking lot of Lederle Laboratories (Wyeth-Ayherst) on Crooked Hill Rd just west of North Middletown Rd. Buses, trucks or other vehicles bringing marchers/equipment are to drop them off at the Crooked Hill Rd. parking lot gate. Lederle does not allow non-employee vehicles to be left in their lot. Q: What is the route of the parade? A: The route of the parade is east on Crooked Hill Rd to N Middletown Rd, then right (south) on N Middletown Rd to E Central Ave. Right (west) on E Central Ave and ends at the west end of W Central Ave (East of Rt 304). (Click to see map)
Q: How long is the parade? A: It takes approximately 45 minutes for the first unit to reach downtown (2:15 PM). A viewer may see up to two hours of parade (4:15 PM). (St Patricks is continuously the biggest in size and spectators).
Q: Where can I leave my car? A: There is absolutely no parking along the parade route (Ticket + Tow = Rotten Day). This is a very popular event so come early and leave your vehicles on the outskirts of the business district so you can bug out early after the event (could take almost an hour otherwise). Please observe all parking restrictions! You may get towed!
Q: Where is the reviewing stand? A: The reviewing stand is usually in front of the Fire House on E.Central Ave. next to the ball field. That's where the bands usually put on a show while the rest of us are twiddling our thumbs down route.
Q: Where is the best place to view the parade? A: The best places to view the parade are on N Middletown Rd and E Central Avenue (the bands are usually pretty tired by the time they get to S Main St.). E Central Ave is very crowded to the point where you have difficulty walking on the sidewalks. N Middletown Rd is more open and less constricted (lots of parking lots).
Q: What other restrictions are there? A: There is an open container law in the Town of Orangetown. That means that there is NO open containers of alcoholic beverages allowed on the public streets. Violators will be summonsed and/or arrested and the beverages seized.
Q: What happens if I lose someone? A: Don't Panic. Due to the crowd, they may be right in front of you and you can't see them. Notify the nearest Police Officer or Auxiliary police Officer. There's one on almost every intersection. He/She will radio headquarters and patrol vehicles will take up the search. Ultimately, all lost children from the parade are brought to the Police booth at the corner of E Central Ave and S Main St (the end of the parade route). Don't fret. We haven't lost a kid yet! Ambulances and Emergency Medical Technicians are strategically situated along the parade route. Q: Are there Fireworks on the Fourth of July? A: The Pearl River Board of Trade sponsors a free concert and fireworks display every 4th of July in downtown Pearl River. All they ask is that you come back often and shop in town the rest of the year.
Q: What time do the fireworks start? A: The free concert in the E. Central Avenue ball field starts about 7:00 PM and the free fireworks just after dark at about 9:00 PM (We just wait for it to get real dark. No carnival delays like other places, even if there is a carnival in town!).
Q: Where is the best place to view the fireworks? A: The fireworks are set up in a field behind the Pearl River Library and, due to the low buildings or absence of buildings surrounding the site, are visible from the E. Central Avenue ball field and surrounding streets.
Q: Street Fairs and Sidewalk Sales A: There are 7 street fairs occuring annually in the Town of Orangetown. Pearl River has two street fairs annually. A two day Sidewalk Sale on Friday and Saturday in July and a Street Fair on the last Sunday in September. Nyack Village has 5 fairs per year put on by the Chamber of Commerce (CofC) and the Arts and Antiques Association (A&AA). They are held on a Sunday. 1. The Spring Fest - held on the last Sunday in April (CofC) 2. The May Street Fair - held on the third Sunday in May (A&AA) 3. The July Street Fair - held on the third Sunday in July (A&AA) 4. The September Fest - held in the middle of September (CofC) 5. The October Street fair - held on the second Sunday in October (A&AA)
Q: "Eyes of Orangetown" Neighborhood Watch A: The Orangetown police Department has a program in which crime prevention officers will address your group and give hints on how to protect your property and persons. Items covered are alarm systems, making your house less likely to be burglarized, senior citizen issues, suspicious persons reporting, watching out for your neighbors, etc. See
Q: I got a ticket. Now what do I do... A: Once a ticket has been issued by our department, it is turned over to the Justice Court and we longer have any control over it.
A: You'd be surprised at the number of phone calls we get from people wanting directions either to or from somewhere. Here are some of the questions and the answers I wish I could give. "How do I get to Pearl River? I'm coming from Ocala, Florida! - Answer: "Drive north until you hit NY and then ask someone". "What's the best way to get to Chicago?? - Answer: "Fly" Seriously! Unless the Dispatcher who answers or someone else in the station at the time knows the way, you're not going to get an answer.
